  • Earth Science Curriculum

    In eighth grade, the students will all learn about Earth Science. Earth Science is the study of our planet, atmosphere and how the two work as a system. Earth Science is important to learn about because most human activities are related to the interaction with our planet -Earth. It is important to learn about how to conserve our resources, take care of our environment and understand what is beyond our atmosphere.

    The students will be performing several labs throughout each unit. Our laboratory assignments are designed to dig deeper in our skills and reach a better understanding of our topics. 
    We begin the year learning about minerals, rocks and the Earth's resources. Here the students will have a better understanding of what the Earth is made up of. The students will be able to identify unknown rocks and minerals, as well as explain the rarity of our natural resources and the importance of using renewable resources. 

    We continue our curriculum learning about the movement on and within Earth. The Earth as a planet is ever changing. The students will be able to explain the interactions that take place on and within the Earth through their studies of; weathering, mass movement, running water, glacers, deserts, winds, earthquakes, plate tectonics and volcanoes. The students will then learn about Earth's geologic history and how long these movements have been in place and the effect it has on us today. 

    Once we have a greater understanding of the physical planet, we will explore our immediate atmosphere and it's effects on the surface of Earth. The students will learn about local weather, regional weather changes and global climate patterns and interactions. The students will be able to identify and explain the interactions between air pressure, wind patterns and severe weather systems to determine how and why we have the weather systems and storms we experience.

    The students will end the year strong by learning about our place within our solar system and galaxy. The students will be able to determine how and why it is so important to take care of our planet- because there is no other just like it.

    Regents Earth Science


    All eighth grade students will learn about Earth Science this year. However, the students enrolled in our accelerated Regents curriculum will also learn about the different types of energy and the electromagnetic spectrum of energy. These students will also dig a little deeper in the topics and complete a minimum of 2,100 minutes of laboratory time (as required NYS). To better prepare the students for their June Regents examination, the students will only be assessed using NYS Regents style questions. Our Regents curriculum won't always be easy, but it will be worth it in the end!
